Provisional Membership

It is a condition of membership that all new members joining the club must either, already hold a BMFA A-Certificate, or pass the BMFA’s A-Test within a reasonable, but flexible, time after joining the club.  The A-Certificate is a measure of flying ability and safety which may be equated to a safe solo standard of flying, and an increasing number of clubs use it as their solo test.

Applicants wishing to join the club who don’t hold an A-Certificate will initially be offered Provisional Membership which includes guidance and hands-on training to assist in passing the A-Test and therefore attaining an A-Certificate.

This is how it works.

If you don’t hold an A-Certificate, then once our club’s training instructor has signed you off to fly solo, you’ll be expected to then work towards attaining your A-Certificate, and one of our senior club members will work with you to help you do just that.

It must be remembered that, if you’ve just been signed off to fly solo, then your standard of flying will be at, or beyond, that required to pass your A-Test.

Although it’s a mandatory requirement for new members to hold an A-Certificate, the club doesn’t put a strict time by when this must be passed.  We recognise there are many factors in aeromodelling that restrict flying time, so we’re flexible in how long it may take.  However, the club reserves the right not to renew Provisional Membership, or to cancel Provisional Membership at any time… but we don’t think either will be necessary.
